Lets talk BB Creams today. For Women of Color they are practically non existent. While there are brands that have shades that are made with Women of Color in mind the reality is that there is usually only one or two colors that are supposed to fit a diverse range of skin tones. It’s as if beauty brands aren’t listening to our laments about how we would like a product that works just as well for us as it does for our lighter counterparts.

One of my fave companies Jane Iredale has added two new shades, BB11 and BB12, made specifically for women of color to their already diverse lineup of Glow Time Full Coverage Mineral BB Cream.

Each shade incorporates natural minerals that adjust to your own skin tone to cover blemishes, minimize pores, disguise wrinkles and smooth and brighten skin. Honestly, this is a BB Cream that every woman wants. In addition, grapefruit and apple extract help exfoliate, refine and rejuvenate skin as you wear the makeup, and may help to fade uneven pigmentation. With the benefits of foundation, concealer, sunscreen and skin care in a versatile one-step product, Glow Time is everything you would expect from the company that invented The Skin Care Makeup®.

  • Contains a broad spectrum SPF 25 UVA PA++ that is water resistant up to 40 minutes
  • Eight carefully calibrated shades address all skin types: BB1, BB3, BB5, BB6, BB7, BB9, BB11 and BB12
  • Titanium dioxide offers anti-inflammatory mineral UV protection
  • Grapefruit extract promotes luminosity and skin radiance, minimizes appearance of pores and wrinkles and may help to fade uneven pigmentation
  • Apple extract is a skin smoothing anti-oxidant that exfoliates, refines and rejuvenates
  • Bitter orange extract naturally perfumes and conditions
  • Sunflower seed oil is rich in moisturizing vitamin E
  • Aloe leaf juice soothes and calms the skin
  • Honeysuckle extract helps purify the skin
  • Iron oxides are natural earth minerals that provide color without the use of FD&C dyes
  • Non-comedogenic, hypoallergenic, sensitivity tested, clinically tested and dermatologist tested

Below are images of the darkest shades from the Jane Iredale Glow Time Full Coverage Mineral BB Cream. I was able to receive samples of shades BB11 and BB12 and I’ve swatched them for you below.

Jane Iredale Glow Time BB Cream.

These are definitely darker BB Creams and a little goes a long way. I just used a dab and had to really blend it out just to get an even layer.  I think the problem with these BB Creams is that they aren’t made to address the undertones found in Women of Color. Have you ever noticed that Sun Screen can cause you’re skin to look a bit ashy? I feel that since BB Creams are made with SPF they automatically lighten the color of the cream making them more useful for women with cool undertones than those with warmer undertones.

While these BB Creams won’t fit with everyone I do applaud Jane Iredale for noticing and addressing the issue. I hope to see them add more BB Creams to this line as I absolutely loved how smooth it applied and even enjoyed the light scent of apples. The Jane Iredale Glow Time Full Coverage BB Cream retails for $48 and is available at janeiredale.com and at select skin care specialists and beauty apothecaries worldwide.

I’d be curious to see them on your skin. They still look slightly ashy in swatches but it’s good that they’re trying!

Super great job for Jane Iredale for adding some shades for women of color. However I totally agree with you many BB creams, the SPF instantly makes darker skin look super ashy. They do look a bit ashy in the swatches but overall pigmented enough to add a bit of color to some darker in skintone. I just hate how anything usually is ashy, orangey, or muddy/dirty when it comes to a darker skin toned BB. Great post girl!

Jamie, I’m routing for Jane Iredale because I know they are company that cares about their consumers. It’s like BB Creams for WOC have that funeral casket makeup look to them. I’m still holding out hope that someone will get it right!

OMG you totally nailed it. Definitely WOC BB give that funeral casket look. I am hoping someone gets it right too. Since I am bi-racial I am that funky skin tone where it’s dirty or orange or straight ghostly. Smh… I can’t win yet. I know Chanel just released there CC and I actually can rock one of the shades. Fingers crossed though someone gets it right soon. Cover FX and Becca have for sure been trying to bridge the gap.

Unfortunately, the shades were a “miss”. You’d think they’d do a ton of testing before launch, right?

    Bummer that they’re so grey-toned 🙁

Wow. those swatches look like ashy city. 🙁 I love that JI has recognized that WOC want BB creams too. Hopefully they will invent some warmer and darker toned colors sooner than later.

I’m glad they tried to widen their collection but I can’t imagine how this would look on the face when they look so gray on your hand!

They look very ashy, not good. I tried this years ago and BB1 was a good match for me. I thought it had good, full coverage and a nice finish. I hope they can fix the undertones to better fit WOC.

I swear – I love JI products… but some are so hit and miss for me. :/

Am I missing something? Why does that BB cream look lavender? I wonder why it’s so hard for cosmetics companies to figure out that there are nuances to darker skintones, just like there are for lighter ones.

WOW I’ve never seen one be such a grey toned color before.

Really, gray-ashy, what’s up with that Jane Iredale? These makeup companies should really learn to invest time in researching/ market-testing before launching new products.

i agree, they’re ashy but they look kinda like chocolate milk…yummy.

  14. June 18, 2014 / 2:39 am

The color of these two looks kind of strange :S

I absolutely loveeee this BB cream. It’s a magic eraser for me but I am fair skinned.

I think the key to remember for WOC is that BB creams were created and designed for the asian market, where sun protection is extremely important and most of the consumers prefer whitening products. It’s the western world that has taken this concept and tried to make it fit to all ethnicities, which I’m yet to see it be able to do.

Well, good for them that they actually made an effort to address the color issue. Hopefully they come out with a wider range of dark shades.

  17. June 18, 2014 / 11:52 am

At least they made an attempt, granted it is totally wrong shades.

  18. June 18, 2014 / 2:36 pm

Even though they most likely won’t work for all, kudos for the brand for addressing darker skin tones.
