Pro Line: SheaMoisture CocoShea Biolipid Complex Curl Memory Leave in Conditioner and Gentle Curl-Cleansing Co-wash Review

Shea Moisture Cocoshea Biolipid Curl Memory Cream, Co Wash, Shea Moisture

Imagine my surprise when I walked into Sally’s Beauty Supply store and found out that my beloved SheaMoisture had snuck in a new Pro line of hair care products on me. Three different product lines make up the SheaMoisture Pro Line Curl Care, Color Care, and Keratin Care. I figured I was all late boots with finding out about this product until I checked out the SheaMoisture Instagram page and found out that they were just introduced 3 weeks ago! Since I’m focusing on loving my natural curls with little manipulation (as seen in this Quick and Easy Wash N Go Tutorial) I decided to pick up the SheaMoisture CocoShea Biolipid Complex with Agave Nectar and Black Seed Oil Curl Memory Leave-In Conditioner and the gentle curl cleansing co-wash.

Before I get into the review let me mention two things. First, these products are only available EXCLUSIVELY at Sally’s Beauty Supply. You can either find them in the store or online. Second, yall… these products come with that professional price tag! Like, let’s be for real. Most of us go to CVS or Walgreens and stock up on SheaMoisture when they have those good ol BOGO deals, and even then the product prices range from  $4.99-$11.99. All the SheaMoisture Pro line products are $19.99.. If you have a Sally’s Beauty Card you can pick them up for the low at $19.79. Since I’m living Broke on Purpose I really had to think about whether or not they should go in my basket or not because this is a hefty price tag. Honestly, for this price I kinda was expecting the hand of God to come down and help detangle my hair, but as you can see I’m doing a review on them so yea I sucked up the price and took them home.

Okay now on the review. The Curl Care Collection: Contains CocoShea TM Biolipid Complex which helps define curls, fight frizz and reduce shrinkage. Certified organic Shea and Cupuacu Butters blend in a nourishing formulation that defines and lengthens even the tightest curls to reduce shrinkage. One thing that stood out to me about this particular product line is that both the Curl Cream and Co-Wash mentioned natural lipids sheathing the hair to help block humidity. Humidity will destroy a fly hair style as we all know.

To try out these products, I washed my hair per usual. Since this was a normal wash I did not use the Gentle Curl-Cleansing Co-Wash. I decided instead to only use the Curl Memory Leave-In Conditioner after the wash and shampoo phase as I felt this product was a 3-n-1 cocktail that summed up your L.O.C. method. Since the product touted Curl Memory I was really curious to see how well it would do on its own with the aid of my trusty Eco Styler Gel. The product applied easily. I did my usual and finger combed it through my hair. What I noticed immediately was that it sort of melted into my hair and didn’t leave white clumps like my Cantu Shea Butter Coconut Curling Cream did. Since I was wearing it alone I shook my hair a couple of times and just allowed it to air dry. It took about 30-45 minutes for the product to completely disappear on my hair. Admittedly, I was very skeptical as I wasn’t seeing the curl definition that I was used to seeing with a wash n go that used gel. My hair didn’t start looking presentable until it was mostly dry, and even then my curls still weren’t popping like I liked and they appeared more “fluffy” as opposed to defined. One thing I can note is the Curl Memory Leave-in Conditioner has a light fragrance to it. I did feel that the fragrance lingered a bit, but nothing that was too overwhelming. My hair completely dried to a soft head of curls and it withstood the humidity of the day as the curls kept their shape. Overall I wasn’t wow’d. I liked only having to use one product after washing my hair, but I knew that this was not going to last me through the night and be presentable the next day due to my hair texture and the lack of a holding product.

Since I work out everyday I try to Co-wash my hair every 2-3 days. I tried out the Gentle Curl-Cleansing Co-Wash the following day from the picture above and absolutely fell in love with it. Since this is a conditioning cleanser it had just enough slip that allowed me to detangle and clean my hair at the same time. I followed up with the Curl Memory cleansing conditioner this time pairing my Eco Styler Olive Oil gel with it. Usually when I pair my gel with a curling cream I end up with what appears to be a lot of product on my hair. The pairing of this particular curling cream and my Eco styler gel was a match made in heaven.  The pairing of these two also helped to tone down the fragrance a bit. My hair consist of various textures. What I liked about the combination of the Curling Cream and the Eco styler gel was that it allowed for my looser curl pattern at the top of my hair to really take shape. I did not see this at all when I used the curl cream alone. If you take a look at the pictures below you’ll notice the definition as well as the shine on my hair. What about second-day hair? As I mentioned I work out daily and sweat from my scalp so it’s important that styles give me good second-day hair. My hair looked more like third-day hair rather than second-day and remember this is with the Eco Styler gel.

Overall I loved the Gentle Curl-Cleansing Co-Wash, but I feel the Curl Memory Leave-In Conditioner can be found in other products at a cheaper price. With such a steep price tag, I really wanted to see something amazing with the Curl Memory Leave-In. Since I would need to use it every 2-3 days I would go through this 16oz jar fairly quickly. I am also not a fan of the scent that I have to walk around with while I’m waiting for the product to dry if worn alone.  This product may work better for those who have a looser curl pattern as there is only so much “anti-shrinkage” a product can give you without one having to physically undergo the process of stretching their hair. Have you tried out any of the SheaMoisture CocoShea Biolipid Complex Pro Line products? If so, what are your thoughts on them? Can you stomach the price tag?

I was super excited for this until I saw the prices! I was hoping they would be significantly larger to help justify it.

I hadn’t seen these yet, but I am glad you reviewed them. I am a confessed product junkie and I love the Shea Moisture products. My hair is more of a kink than a curl and I often look for products that offer some sort of definition. I knew when you said that the leave-in conditioner had left you with “fluffy” curls when worn alone that it was not going to work for me. I use the LOC method as well and I see the difference it made when you paired it with the Eco Styler gel. I have to have my gel!! Your review has been very helpful to me. The price tag was on the high end as well so your review let me know that it’s not for my money. Thanks so much, and by the way you looked great in both photos.

I tried the curl memory leave in conditioner. I was looking for a product that could aid in controlling my frizz prone 3c/4a hair while also providing a bit of definition. I started with clean hair, applied coconut oil and proceed to finger shingle my hair with the Curl Crème (using only a dime size amount per section) I finished it off by palming Eco Styler on each section (this is my usually process however I swapped Curl Enhancing Smoothie for Curl Crème). I did receive the results I was hoping to achieve. My hair feels dry and brittle with no definition what-so-ever. Just a frizzy dry hot mess. This product definitely did not work for me. I have better results with the Curl Enhancing Smoothie; this offers more slip and weight in my opinion.

I’m an advocate of all things Shea Moisture so I’m hoping that my results were due to a flaw in my application. Please provide feedback or suggestions if you would have experienced better results.

Additionally I’m not a big fan of smelly products whether good or bad. Which is another reason why I’m seeking an alternate product to the deliciously sweet smelling Curl Enhancing Smoothie. While the smell is pleasant; the Curl Crème smells much stronger but more like a salon product (hence the product line) which is even worse to me.

CORRECTION: I did NOT receive the results I was hoping to achieve.

I honestly couldn’t do anything with the curl memory cream and so I took it back.$20 is a lot of money to spend on a hair product and for me to spend that type of money it really needs to work. I did keep the Leave In though as I really liked that.

I’m sorry, I’m confused. :-/ Didn’t you say you didn’t really like the Curl Memory Leave-in Conditioner? Did you mean you kept and really liked the Co-wash?

I kept the co-wash as I mentioned the curl memory leave in didn’t wow me.
