How You Can Take Part in the Period Project

I’m giving you deets on the how you can be a part of the Period Project in collaboration with U By Kotex. While this post is sponsored it’s a cause I’m passionate about. Thank you for letting me share brands that I care about with you. #periodproject

Periods. Aunt Flo. The Curse of Eve. That Time of the Month.

These are just some of the names that women use to describe their menstrual cycles. Many women look at having a menstrual cycle as a right of passage into the world of womanhood. I mean it’s kind of a big deal. Your body is changing. Yet for some reason, this change is often met with shame, fear and ridicule from the world around us. I remember being ashamed to go into the store and buy pads or tampons because all I could think was that they’ll know I’m on my period. I remember the look on my husbands face the first time I asked him to pick up these much-needed items for me. While my experience is common it’s not at all as common as the number of women who have no access to feminine products.

Did you know that an estimated 40 million women living in this country who live or on the brink of poverty find that the cost of feminine products is a burden on their already stretched budgets? A year supply of tampons and pads can cost as much as $70 per person. When you have multiple women in the home on an already stretched budget the cost of these items tend to make them a luxury and not a necessity. Women who are homeless have an even harder time gaining access to these essential items as feminine products are often not received in donations.

Learning about this sparked a fire in me. All I could think is what if it were me or women in my family who couldn’t afford or didn’t have access to feminine products. What would I want people to do in order to help me? This is why I’ve teamed up with U by Kotex for help spread the word about their Power to the Period Campaign. Power to the Period is the first-ever national period products drive and second installment of the U by Kotex Period Projects – a groundbreaking series of projects, each inspired and led by a woman who shares the brand’s passion for creating change.

I’ve already started the conversation with my peers about how we can drum up support from other classmates to donate and here’s more info on how you can get involved.

Remember, when donating to donate unopened packages of period products (pads, panty liners, etc.), as opposed to individually wrapped items. It’s more hygienic, and it’s important that people see the instructions on the package.
