Teach Them to Embrace Their Curls with Born Curly® Hair Products!

Just the other day I was laughing with my hairstylist over memories of having my hair pressed as a child. The hot comb would sit on the eye of the stove, and I would patiently sit as my grandmother pressed my hair for Sunday service the next day. The hardest part about having my hair pressed as a child was the full 24hrs I wasn’t allowed to act like a child for fear my hair would revert to its curly kinky state. Those are memories I cherish, and it’s only normal that we want to pass on those same types of memories to our children. Natural hair wasn’t a “thing” when I was younger, but as it has become more and more socially acceptable to wear our hair in its natural state it’s important that we teach our children the importance of loving their hair and teaching them the proper ways to take care of it early so that as they become adults they wear their hair proudly.

I am a huge fan of the As I Am™ hair care line, so I was excited to see that they came out with a line catering to children with natural hair. The As I Am™ Born Curly® products are professionally formulated with certified organic/natural functional ingredients and are especially designed to provide safer and toxic free ingredients for babies/children with naturally curly hair. This is great because even though many of the products we use have natural ingredients, sometimes the formulation can be a bit too strong for children. They even carry an NSF Seal of Approval, which means that the products have been tested by respected independent certification organizations to certify that they are indeed organic.

I don’t have children, but my best friend has a beautiful daughter who I knew these products would work great on. Since she is wearing her hair in a natural braided protective style and her scalp has been a bit dry from shampooing, we decided to try out the Avocado Shea Cowash. This way we could cleanse her scalp and condition at the same time. We worked the conditioner onto her scalp while massaging and then rinsed her hair. What I like about these products is that even though they have yummy names like Avocado Shea or Rosemary Vanilla they don’t have strong scents. Most kids develop sensitivities early and even as an adult I can’t handle strongly perfumed products in my hair

To follow up the cowash we then used the Nourishing Hair & Body OilNourishing Hair and Body oil and applied it onto her scalp taking our time to really rub it in as with protective style like braids it’s super important to keep the scalp moisturized as sometimes braids that aren’t properly taken care of can do more damage than good. The Born Curly Nourishing Hair and Body oil is light and not too viscous and absorbed into her scalp easily.
