Is it wrong to say that I wasn’t interested in the MAC Lip Scrubtious when I first heard about it? I mean in my head I assumed it was just another sugar scrub and we’ve all seen plenty of Pinterest tutorials on how to make your own at home. To me, lip scrubs should be an essential part of any one’s beauty routine, especially if you plan on wearing a matte lipstick or during the winter months. Lip scrubs do more than just help to remove all that dead unflattering skin from the lips, but also add back in essential oils and moisture.

MAC describes their Lip Scrubtious as

“NEW SUGAR-BASED EXFOLIATOR GENTLY BUFFS AWAY DRY AND FLAKY SKIN WITH A FORMULA ENHANCED BY HYDRATING AND NOURISHING CONDITIONERS LEAVING LIPS SOFT AND OH-SO-SMOOCHABLE”

Lip Scrubtious comes in five “flavors” SWEET VANILLA, CANDIED NECTAR, FRUIT OF PASSION,  SUMMER BERRY, and SWEET BROWN SUGAR. They each get their name from the fragrance within the scrub. I was sent Summer Berry to try out, and it arrived just in time as I’ve fallen absolutely head over heels for the MAC Retro Matte LipsticksUnlike other lip scrubs the Lip Scrubtious is not actually a sugar scrub, but a “sugar based” scrub. I was expecting to see large crystal pieces of sugar, but instead, I found a smooth oil based lip balm.  I wasn’t exactly sure how this was going to work, and after rubbing my finger across the top, the product began to melt down into a more pliable formula that I could easily smooth onto my lips.

As I tried out the product I couldn’t help but be a skeptic. I mean how was this going to exfoliate my lips without the large pieces of sugar that I’ve grown accustomed to? As I rubbed the Lip Scrubtious on my lips, the product continued to melt down into a hydrating oil. After about maybe 1 1/2- 2 minutes of rubbing I decided to wipe it off with a damp cloth and check out the results.

To my surprise, the Lip Scrubtious worked and took off almost all of the dead skin on my lips! Maybe if I left it on a little longer, it would have taken off more, but even with the bit that came off, I was impressed. Another thing to note is that the purple color didn’t stain my lips and instead left them feeling soft and hydrated.

The Breakdown

Where to buy: MACCosmetics.com, MAC Boutiques, and Counters

Price: $16.

Do I need it: MAC released Lib Scrubtious on the heels of it’s Retro Matte Lipsticks which I think is genius. Scrub Scrubs are sugar scrubs, so if you have one, you kind of have them all. Yea, some are formulated differently as seen with this “sugar based” lip scrub, but they all ultimately do the same thing, and that’s get the dead funky stuff off your lips. Exfoliating your lips every day can be a bit harsh so I like how this one doesn’t actually have crystals in it, but when it comes down to it, I would pass on this particular product.
