Lupita Nyong’o is the New Brand Ambassador for Lancome and proves Beauty is More Than what’s Trending Now.

When Lupita Nyong’o won an Oscar for her role in 12 years a slave the beauty word was a flurry with which company she should become a brand ambassador for. Everyone was casting their lots their company of choice and  I’ll admit I would have loved to see her with Make Up For Ever or Nars, but with every nucleotide in my body I did not want to see her with MAC Cosmetics. Why? Why would I not want  see one of the most admirable and influential African American icon’s with one of the top cosmetics companies in the world? It’s simple MAC has handed out cosmetic collections like they’re condoms at the free clinic. Yes, I said it and it’s true. To me, a MAC collection doesn’t live up to the same prestige that it once had in that past. MAC used to work with Icons and trailblazers, now it appears that they work with whomever seems to be trending on twitter for a particular period of time. Plan and simple Lupita deserved more. She deserves to be honored for more time than a virtual welfare waiting room and forgotten swatches and vlogs can allow. She needs more than a signature on a lipstick or an eyeshadow palette that will be lost in a “stash”. She needed to be with a company that would make her and her cause for promoting self love and awareness relative for years to come.

When I awoke the morning and saw Lupita Nyong’o is the new Brand Ambassador for Lancome my heart and soul smiled. While Lancome isn’t a company that’s hip to the “in the moment” trendsetting crowd it has, since it’s inception 75 years ago, epitomized beauty and glamour with products ranging from skin care to perfume. Lupita will be the first Black Ambassador for the brand joining of the ranks of the forever iconic and beautiful Julia Roberts and Kate Winslet.

“What appealed to me about Lancôme is that they’re not dictating what beauty is,”Lupita told WWD. She went on to express her goals for the partnership, saying “hopefully it’s a symbiotic relationship — that I benefit from being associated with them, and they benefit from being associated with me, as well. And for the consumer at large, I think Lancôme has a range of products for every woman, and I think having me will expand people’s understanding of, hopefully, what Lancôme stands for, who Lancôme is for.”

Lupita ads for Lancome will appear starting in September.  I am eager to all things positive come into fruition from this collaboration.

I think it was only a matter of time before one of the big brands nabbed her. I’m a little surprised it was Lancome, I definitely had her pegged as a Revlon girl first but hey, whoever brought the money would have won.
