What Women Experience Most After Pregnancy

#recycleyourperiodpads

My husband and I really don’t discuss having children. Sure, we’d like to one day but for now we are content on the lives we lead with our two dogs. Last week while at the gyno for my yearly checkup my doctor begins to question me about if I’m ready for kids yet. This is the same song and dance we’ve been doing for the past five years now except this time it was a little different.

Her: Have you given any thoughts to having children

Me: Not really, I still want to wait until I graduate.

Her: Well, you don’t want to wait too long.

Me: What’s too long? I know lots of women who have had kids when they’re older.

Her: Oh yeah, you can have kids all the way up to the time you reach menopause, but you’re more likely to have complications.

This is when I began to feel anxiety creep over me. Like the walls were closing in and I wasn’t going to be able to breath if the conversation went on any longer. This was just not a conversation I was ready to have. She apparently sensed this and ended the conversation by saying she wasn’t trying to rush me, she just wanted me to know that I shouldn’t wait too long if I was interested in having kids.

Don’t get me wrong I do want to have kids.. I think. Every time I see someone I know have a baby I think aww that could be me one day, then I look at my student loan debt, reality hits and I’m like yeah no I’m good, the baby is definitely cute, but I’m good.

Thinking of this led me to a conversation I had with a group of friends about what really happens to your body after you’ve had a baby. Oh, I don’t mean the sleepless nights or fatigue from having a newborn I mean the real stuff. You know the kind they don’t talk about in the magazines. One of my friends who just recently had a baby brought up a whole slew of things like Perineal Tears, the never-ending after birth menstrual cycle, breast engorgement pain, Melasma, hair loss, and, of course, pelvic floor weakness.

While all woman may not experience everything mentioned above almost 30% of woman who deliver babies vaginally suffer with incontinence due to pelvic floor weakness.  This is one of the causes Light Bladder Leakage (Light Bladder Leakage). Actually, one in three women experience Light Bladder Leakage– little leaks that can be triggered by everyday occurrences like coughing, sneezing, laughing and exercise. Other causes of light bladder leakage include being overweight, complications from surgery, stroke, or chronic disease like diabetes, multiple sclerosis (MS) or Parkinson’s disease, bladder or urinary tract infections and even certain foods.

While I may not be a mom yet, I do know lots of women who are pregnant, new moms, or even season moms who deal with this problem. The most important thing my friend told me was that all the after effects that come along with pregnancy are minimal compared to the overwhelming love and joy one feels from birthing a child. With Mother’s Day right around the corner, I’m giving one lucky mom the chance to win a $25 GiftCard to the store of their choice. The contest will end on May 25th. It’s not much, but it’s my way of saying Thank You!  If you’re on mobile just click the “A Rafflecopter giveaway” link to enter! Don’t want to enter the give away?
