Vault + Vine. When Two of Your Favorite Things Collide

Of course, after I defend my dissertation and leave East Falls a spot that combines two of my top loves, plants, and coffee opens its doors to the public. After scrolling through Vault + Vine’s Instagram feed I knew I had to stop by to check it out and treat possible treat myself to a plant or two.

Vault + Vine is located at 3507 Midvale.  Inside you’ll find a Floral event studio, charming greenhouse. coffee shop and chic boutique where you’ll easily lose time if you’re not careful. As I’m on a mission to stealthy turn my own into an urban jungle under my husband’s nose I knew this was the perfect place for me to be to check some plants off my list.  I took my sweet time browsing through the boutique, taking in everything from the jewelry to the succulent shaped candles that I for one could never bring myself to burn, but are simply perfect for that friend that has trouble keeping them alive.

I’d made plans to hang out in the coffee shop while catching up on some reading but unfortunately all the seats were filled and rightfully so. Who wouldn’t want to enjoy a cup of joe or a freshly brewed cup of tea under the canopy of some of natures gorgeous greenery?

The Greenhouse was like my playground. I was mesmerized by all the different varieties of succulents and was mentally making notes of all the other plants within. As the succulents in my DIY succulent terrarium didn’t fare too well due to my overwatering I decided to stay away from those and pick out hardier ones. Throughout my browsing, I spotted a plant that I’d picked up at my local grocery store just the week before. Unfortunately, the grocery store just a sticker on it that listed it as green foliage ( no sh*t Sherlock) so I honestly had no idea what it was. Turns out it was a Morata also known as the “prayer plant” due to the fact that it’s leaves turn upwards at night. Some say that it follows circadian rhythm who knows? All I know was that I was excited to have successfully identified it.

After spending some time chatting with the knowledgeable staff and owner Peicha Chang I decided to bring home a ZZ plant (zamioculcas zamiifolia) in one of the cute Vault and Vine pots, a schefflera arboricola, a small spider plant, a small flowering Anthurium Prince of Orange, and a Sansevieria of the black coral variety. I’ve made plans to return in hopes of snagging a seat in the coffee shop as well as maybe bringing home a coveted Ficus or Monstera.
